St. Lucia's size has allowed for the construction of two gateways on the island. One St. Lucia airport, Hewanorra International, is a large, modern facility equipped to handle international flights coming from both North America and Europe. Many large carriers offer either direct or connecting service to the main St. Lucia airport, including American Airlines, US Airways, British Airways, and Air Canada. This major St. Lucia airport hub, which is located on the southern tip of the island near Vieux Fort, can also be reached from the larger Caribbean islands like Jamaica and Barbados.

A smaller St. Lucia airport, the George F.L. Charles Airport in Castries, handles most of the inter-Caribbean island-hopper traffic to and from St. Lucia. Most Caribbean airlines, like Air Caraibes, Caribbean Star, and LIAT, fly into this St. Lucia airport, making the island easily accessible from almost anywhere in the West Indies.
